Drive the legendary highway across the Tianshan Mountains -- through snow peaks, alpine lakes, emerald grasslands, and dramatic canyons in one unforgettable 8-day journey.
The Duku Highway (独库公路) is one of China's most spectacular drives, cutting through the heart of the Tianshan Mountains. Open only from June to September, this 561-kilometer route transforms dramatically from arid Gobi desert to snow-capped peaks, pristine alpine lakes, lush grasslands, and dense spruce forests. Our 8-day adventure follows this legendary road with expert local guides, comfortable accommodations, and authentic cultural encounters along the way.
Each day brings a new landscape, a new culture, and a new adventure across the Tianshan Mountains.
Welcome to Xinjiang! After arrival, explore the vibrant Grand Bazaar (大巴扎) and stroll along Hotan Er Street (和田二街), soaking in the local atmosphere. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner featuring authentic Xinjiang cuisine -- lamb kebabs, hand-pulled noodles, and naan bread.
Begin the journey westward. Explore the dramatic Dushanzi Grand Canyon (独山子大峡谷), carved over millennia by the Kuitun River. Walk along cliff-edge walkways and marvel at the otherworldly rock formations. Continue through vast Gobi landscapes to Jinghe for the night.
Today's highlight is the breathtaking Sayram Lake (赛里木湖) -- the highest and largest alpine lake in Xinjiang, known as 'the last tear of the Atlantic.' Circle the crystal-blue waters with snow-capped peaks reflecting on the surface. Then cross the magnificent Guozigou Bridge (果子沟大桥), an engineering marvel suspended above a deep valley. Arrive in Yining for an evening stroll.
Explore Yining's colorful neighborhoods: Six Star Street (六星街) with its multicultural charm, and Kazanqi (喀赞其) -- a vibrant Uyghur quarter with blue-painted houses, horse-drawn carts, and artisan workshops. Then drive to the remarkable octagonal city of Tekes (特克斯), the world's largest bagua-shaped city, designed in the 12th century.
Venture into Kuerdening (库尔德宁), a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its ancient Tianshan spruce forests. Walk among towering trees in pristine valleys. Then continue to the sweeping Nalati Grassland (那拉提), where rolling green hills stretch to the horizon under big blue skies.
Ride horseback across the famous Sky Grassland (空中草原), alpine meadows at 2,000m elevation where Kazakh herders graze their livestock. Drive through the Hundred Miles Gallery (百里画廊), a scenic valley of wildflower meadows and river gorges. End the day soaking in Tangbula's natural hot springs surrounded by mountains.
The grand finale -- drive the most dramatic northern section of the Duku Highway. Cross high mountain passes with snow walls towering on both sides, witness cascading waterfalls, and take in panoramic views of the Tianshan range. This is the road that makes the entire journey legendary. Return to Urumqi in the evening.
Transfer to Urumqi Diwopu International Airport for your onward journey. Depending on your flight time, there may be a chance for last-minute shopping at local markets for dried fruits, jade, and Xinjiang specialties.
